Stop blaming your hormones – weight gain is simpler than that

In the article, 3 fat-storing hormones and their effect on weight, I explain how hormones influence our weight (fat) loss efforts.

Now, I know, we as society, like to place the blame on things we think we can’t control.

Hence, I want to take a moment to remind ourselves of factors that contribute to or influence weight gain.

  • Excess energy intake

particularly from eating the wrong kinds of food. This is certainly one major reason. In addition, eating highly processed food with less than optimal ingredients, even if touted healthy, too, contributes to unhealthy weight.

  • Unhealthy dieting habits as well as yo-yo dieting and fasting,

too, can keep us from losing weight (read fat) successfully, and more keeping it off. Worse, such habits make it more difficult to develop healthy eating behavior as well as healthy relationships with food and our body.

  • Muscle mass loss

due to excess caloric restriction or excess energy expenditure (without appropriate energy intake).  This is one reason why prolonged cardiovascular activity, which by the way wreaks havoc on our stress hormone can, too, lead to weight gain.

  • Gut and organ health

if our gut bacteria aren’t balanced and our digestive system as well as organs don’t function properly, that, too can influence weight. And by the way, if you believe detox diets or juice diets are the way to support healthy weight you might be surprised to hear they are just another marketing fad.

  • Lifestyle, environment, social circle, habits,…

all influence weight and hormones:

– how we sleep or deal with stress

– frequency and amount of alcohol intake

– how often we eat out or consume processed food

– toxins in our environment, just think cigarettes, smog, dust or plastic but also toxic people and negativity contribute to weight gain impeding weigh loss efforts.

– our relationships, however, can too hinder weight loss success

  • Mental health, level of self-awareness,

included are self-development challenges or conflicting mind-sets. Sometimes we want to be and live healthy but life around us is chaos. During these testing period all we can do is support our body as much as possible keeping our limitations in mind.

  • Hormones,

yes, that’s one topic many of us like to give blame to. I can’t lose weight; it’s the fault of my hormones. And yes, hormones do play a crucial role but understand hormones rarely are the sole contributor to weight (read fat) gain. Even though I know we love giving blame to things we don’t really understand – it makes it easy. But, it’s not a solution. So quit taking the easy way out and get to the true culprit of it.

But given that there are 3 „fat- storing hormones“ feel free to read over the article. There are a few things we CAN do to support hormonal balance, health, and weight.
